Capital Conversion Group is located in the Eastern Suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. This is the core of the Great Lakes region, which has been severely affected by the economic downturn of the past two years, 2006 and 2007. Business closings and loss of employment have put much of Ohio and surrounding states on a Federal list of dubious distinction. We are on the list of Labor Surplus Areas for the Federal fiscal year running October 2007, through September 2008. While the statistical definition of a labor surplus area changes with the overall national unemployment situation, essentially, we have an unemployment and underemployment rate more than 20% above the national average.

During a meeting of the Commission on Affordable Housing, in Cleveland, attended by representatives of Capital Conversion Group, the point was made that if you overlay the maps of closed businesses and home foreclosures, there is an almost 1 to 1 overlap. This makes perfectly good, if tragic sense, as Cleveland and the surrounding region also have one of the highest foreclosure rates in the country. Business closing means loss of jobs, loss of income, and then loss of homes and population. And the cycle repeats, with fewer people to be customers and clients for the remaining businesses.

There are many “initiatives” proposed to save jobs in Cuyahoga County, surrounding Cleveland, but none seem to go far afield from the “conventional wisdom” of finance. We know there are other sources of funds and ways to get them into the community that can and will help individual businesses stay in business, maintain employment, and even grow in these difficult times. We know because that is our business.
